Everyone loves a home site with a view. New housing developments have home lots that overlook golf courses, lakes and woodland areas. But have you ever thought about a river view? You might be interested to know that such an opportunity exists along the Wabash River.
Indianan’s state song regales the Wabash River. The Miami Indians named the river Wah-Bah-Shik-Ka, meaning pure white, for the color of its waters and the French called it Ouabache. On land steeped in history, Jim Wilson, owner of Wilson Realty and Development, Inc., is co-developing Indian Ridge on the Southwest edge of Huntington with partner Luck Scheer on some of Indiana’s most beautiful unspoiled riverfront property.
“Covering 250 acres, the development sits high above the Wabash River for scenic home setting,” said Wilson. The lots are one-third to half-acres, tracts priced from $21,400 to $36,900. The lots are fully serviced by the city of Huntington. “There are 110 houses currently and we hope to build around 300 to 375 total. We have a lot of river frontage lots still available,” Wilson said.
“Up until now we have built entry level affordable homes starting at $100,000. Currently we are building homes in the $150,000 - $225,000. All builders are welcome as long as they follow architectural guidelines for the development. Currently some builders from Fort Wayne such as Lancia Homes are building homes with us,” Wilson said.
The Wabash River is remembered as the primary fur trade route over two centuries ago from the St. Lawrence River and, lower Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the struggle for control of the New World by the French and British took place along its banks. However the Miami Indians were the first people who occupied the banks of the Wabash and many important villages were located along its length.
As a fitting tribute to the property on which Indian Ridge is built, the street names are named after famous Miami Indians such as Chief Little Turtle, his family members, and French traders. “A distinctive boulder, characteristic of the fieldstone found in the area along the river, marks the entrance to the development, and colored boulders are placed at each lot to compliment that particular home.” Wilson said.
For people who want to get away from larger communities, this neighborhood could be the idyllic spot they’re looking for. With a population of around 17,000, Huntington has a great school system, shopping, restaurants and brims with cultural and historical events throughout the year. And if you feel the call of the big city once in awhile, Fort Wayne is only twenty-eight miles away via Highway 24.
“I want people to see the beauty of this area and to be able to appreciate the history of this river,” Wilson said. “Plus, Huntington is a very nice community to settle in.”
